The initiative of the Municipal Government of Uberlândia, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in partnership with the Municipal Coordination for Protection and Civil Defense of Uberlândia (Compdec), the 5th Military Firefighters Battalion, and the 9th Civil Defense Region (9th Redec/PMMG), is part of the Integrated Plan of Actions and Prevention of Climate Impacts. The main avenue of the second-largest city in Minas Gerais, Rondon Pacheco Avenue, received 10 Imply® Fixed Variable Message Signs, installed at strategic points along 7 km. VMS units are equipped with cutting-edge technology, as well as an innovation that transforms the Panels into important alert devices for weather conditions and disaster risks. The region suffers from constant flooding because the drainage gallery systems cannot handle the water flow during periods of heavy rainfall.
Equipped with sirens for audible warnings, the VMS units issue alerts simultaneously with the message displayed on the panel, aiming to warn not only drivers and road users but also the local population about the overflow of the galleries. Powerful, the sirens can be heard within a radius of more than 100 meters from where they are installed. The VMS control center will operate in the Traffic Lights, Programming and Statistics Unit and in the Civil Defense Secretariat, operating 24 hours a day, every day of the week. Messages are displayed using high-brightness amber LEDs, providing clear and effective visibility even from a distance and under sunlight. There are 3 lines of text in an area of 4.8 m², with 256 brightness levels. The Panels have UPS systems that allow continuous operation for up to one hour in the event of a power outage.
