The Renovation That Gave Teatro Dante Barone Back to the Public

Few stages in Rio Grande do Sul hold as much history as Dante Barone. Opened on December 22, 1970, the theater operates inside Palácio Farroupilha, home of the state parliament. Since then, it has hosted plays, concerts, dance, film screenings, swearing-in ceremonies, seminars and public hearings.

In July 2024, ALRS closed the venue for the largest renovation in its history. Full Tec Engenharia carried out the work, which required an investment of about R$31 million. In addition, the project renewed the roof, acoustics, stage lighting and sound system.

Safety also got special attention. Today the theater complies with the Fire Prevention and Protection Plan (PPCI). Besides that, it offers a wheelchair lift, tactile maps and braille signage. Meanwhile, the audience area grew from 568 to 586 seats.

At the reopening on June 19, 2026, the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra (OSPA) returned to the stage. Once again, the orchestra opened the concert with Carlos Gomes’s “Sinfonia Il Guarany”. It was the same piece the orchestra played at the inauguration, 56 years earlier.

The two screens join the theater’s new technology package, together with the stage lighting and sound. With 4K resolution, they display videos, digital scenery, presentations and live images from the stage. As a result, people in the front row and in the back of the room enjoy the same sharpness.

Unlike a projector, an LED panel doesn’t need a dark room to keep its contrast. That detail matters in a multipurpose theater. After all, a fully lit ceremony may come before a performance on the same day. Furthermore, the technical team can change content in minutes, with no printed material.

Imply® managed the project from sizing to installation, with its own engineering, manufacturing and support. The result adds to other Imply® LED Panel projects in Brazil and abroad.

Why Are Theaters and Public Venues Investing in Full Color LED Panels?

Theaters and public venues invest in LED panels because a single screen serves very different events. At Dante Barone, for example, the screen works as scenery for a performance. At another moment, it shows the speaker at a public hearing. It also improves image quality on TV Assembleia broadcasts.

Long-term cost counts too. Banners, vinyl prints and printed scenery need new production for every event. On the panel, on the other hand, a new file is all it takes. For a theater with a busy schedule, that means less logistics and more time for programming.

Finally, there is the audience experience. With 18 more seats and new accessible spaces, Dante Barone welcomes more people. Therefore, every spectator needs a clear view from any point in the room.

In fact, the public sector is one of the segments where Imply® works the most. Its solutions range from LED screens to the Imply® Parliamentary Voting System for plenary halls.

What People Involved in the Project Say

The Administrative and Financial Superintendent of the Legislative Assembly, Carlos Cogo, highlights the project’s importance for the institution and for the city. “Teatro Dante Barone went through a structural renovation to offer more quality and safety to people. Today’s delivery is the icing on the cake, because we will have innovative image and broadcast technology to host large and important events. This progress becomes even more important because of the Theater’s location. It sits inside the People’s House, the Legislative Assembly. It is great for the Assembly to have Imply® here, and it is certainly positive for the company to be with us.”
